Talking of what is it with ...? What is it with The Independent newspaper? On Sunday we had this headline (sorry that I can't find the picture of the front cover that went with it):
Independent on Sunday Campaign: Honour our troops
(Someone from The Independent on Sunday even went to the trouble of posting a message on a military forum looking for stories from returning wounded service personnel to support their campaign.)
On Tuesday we get this front page from the same paper:
In case the picture has gone, on the left is an image of George Bush visiting troops in Iraq yesterday, with the word 'Cut' covering a story about proposed cuts in trooop levels there (something one would have thought the Independent would welcome).
On the right is a picture of a column of British armoured vehicles leaving the old base at Basra Palace for the airport, with the word 'Run' underneath.
This must be a meaning of the phrase, 'Honour our troops' with which the rest of us are unfamiliar.

ReplyDeleteThe best way of honouring our troops is indeed to disengage them as quickly as possible from the dishonourable position they have been sent into in Iraq.
