A 'random act of culture' stills the tills

If you enjoyed that bit in The Shawshank Redemption where all the convicts stand listening as Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) locks himself in the warden's office and plays opera over the prison loudspeakers, you'll probably enjoy this real-life version.

    1. This building, the old Wannamakers Bldg., is just up the street from the famed and faithful Tenth Presbyterian Church, a home parish to me while at Westminster. www.tenth.org. Dr. James Montgomery Boice was the Pastor. One of the nation's best.

    2. Also, close at hand is (President) George Washington's Church, Christ's (Anglican) Church. George, Ben Franklin (deist probably) and Jay Adams worshipped here. http://www.christchurchphila.org/ But, today Christ Church jurisdictionally belongs days to the pluralist, inclusivist (including heretics, apostates and an host of doctrinal indifferentists), un-Confessional, pan-sexualist and oppressive dragoons of the American Episcopalian regiments. Also, this was the Church of the first senior Presbyter (Bishop) in the US, Bishop William White--the place where the 1789 BCP was embraced alongside the adoption of the milquetoast form of subscription to the Thirty-nine Articles.

    3. The building once belonged to a business magnate, Wannaker, an ardent and devout Methodist. He was an "evangelical" and the presence of that great organ is traceable to that. Macy's the bought the store out.

    4. A lovely moment in "historic" Philadelphia (Americans think 200 years means "historic." Haha! No secondary schools with English history. None in the colleges, except for upper level and grad school. History began with the Americans...tongue firmly in cheek.)

  2. John,

It is poignant. These shoppers are singing Scripture! In the Shawshank Redemption, the opera (I think) is Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, when the characters sing about forgiveness & peace in the last scene. Is it that what truly moves us in music is when music points us to another world - a world of harmony & peace. Is music typological of the supreme harmony (as Jonathan Edwards would put it) of the Trinity?
