Microsoft Update may lock you out of Internet

This is not a spoof. I suspected something like this was why my desktop computer suddenly refused to connect to the internet last night.

Hundreds of thousands of people who use the ZoneAlarm firewall to protect their PC have been locked out of the internet by Microsoft's latest round of software updates. Microsoft released four high-priority fixes as part of its regular Patch Tuesday update, one of which left ZoneAlarm users without web access.

It is thought that the MS08-037 fix is designed to plug a vulnerability in the way that Windows handles the internet's system of addresses, which could have allowed hackers to reroute web users to malicious web pages. The patch appears to have been responsible for "compatibility issues" with ZoneAlarm. Read more
